The move was supposed to be a fresh start. Instead, I found myself in a strange city in the middle of nowhere, living with a man who was losing his soul. My husband—once strong, sensual, and grounded—was now riding the "crazy train" at full speed. As brilliant as he was, he had become obsessed with a desperate quest to exorcise the "demons" he claimed were rotting him from the inside.
"Demons." That was the word that began to haunt our hallways the moment we arrived in this town, miles away from everyone I loved. But we’ll get to that.
The Sunday Invitation
It started like any other "abnormal" Sunday. I was in the spare room, fussing with my computer with both dogs anchored at my feet. Through the doorway, I could see him in the other bedroom in his underwear. I knew what he was doing—the rituals, the checking—but that is a story for another day.
Suddenly, he emerged and walked slowly down the hall. Six-foot-five of pure, sculpted muscle, he leaned against the doorframe with a face of stone. I was zeroed in, lusting over his body like a hyena waiting for the lion to give the signal to move. I say that because, in the weeks leading up to this, I wasn’t the lion—the demons were.
As he spoke, I had tunnel vision. Electric shocks pulsed through my body just looking at him. I didn't comprehend a single word he said, but I covered my tracks with a bright, "Yes! Sure, that sounds great!"
What had I agreed to? Meeting "the group." I am a social butterfly by nature; I figured a little community couldn't hurt.
The Car of Silence
As the hour approached, I dressed to impress, playing the part of the supportive wife. We jumped into the car—the Car of Silence. I had no idea what was happening behind his eyes. He stared through the windshield as if his soul had vacated the premises. I tried to ignore the heavy energy in the cabin, feeling like a puppy holding back a frantic wag, waiting for the door to open.
We pulled up to a nondescript office building and climbed to the second floor. We were greeted by people who were warm ... a little too warm. My husband’s demeanor snapped instantly; he shed the frozen stare and greeted them like a perfectly adjusted human being. It should have been a red flag, but my curiosity was already leading me by the throat.
There were refreshments and standard small talk. Where did you meet? What do you do? My husband played the role of the doting partner perfectly. "My wife and I met..." he’d begin, weaving a tale of normalcy that almost made me believe him.
The Circle and the Gurney
Then, the atmosphere shifted. The leader, a middle-aged nurse with an intense gaze, gathered us into a room where chairs formed a jagged circle around a strange centerpiece: a cross between a dental chair and a medical gurney.
As we took our seats, a man moved to sit next to me but suddenly recoiled in shock. He looked at me as if he recognized me from a past life—and not a pleasant one. He backed away as if I were engulfed in flames, eventually settling across the circle where he continued to burn a hole in me with a creepy, wide-eyed stare.
The lights went out. The air grew thick with the scent of struck matches and hot wax. The nurse whispered for us to close our eyes. How do you relax in a place like this? My energy was vibrating at a fever pitch. What the fuck did he get me into? I kept one eye cracked, watching the shadows.
The Ritual
The primal thumping of drums began, layered over the ethereal drone of yoga music. The leader’s voice cut through the dark: "Who wants to go first?"
"I will."
My husband’s voice, resonant and massive, commanded the room. He climbed onto the chair-table, lying face up with his arms folded over his chest like a corpse prepared for a viewing.
The room slipped into the "Twilight Zone." The nurse began the "Energy Work," her hands clawing at the air above him as if pulling invisible, sticky threads from his skin. Then came the Sound Healing—the rhythmic thumping and the piercing, metallic ring of singing bowls.
Suddenly, my husband’s body arched violently. A low, guttural growl escaped his throat. It wasn't a cry of pain; it sounded like an eviction.
I sat there—the social butterfly trapped in a room of shadows—watching the man I loved undergo a public exorcism in a commercial office suite.
The Aftermath
When the lights hummed back on, the "normalcy" returned with jarring speed. My husband stood up, adjusted his clothes, and brushed his shoulders off as if he were flicking away the remnants of a shattered demon. He smiled, shook hands, and offered hugs as if we’d just finished a pleasant Thanksgiving dinner.
I followed his lead, masking my confusion with a practiced smile, but I felt the weight of the room. I felt the "warmth" of the group’s goodbyes, and the sharp dagger of the creepy man’s stare at my back.
We paraded out of the building. My husband’s body went limp again as he climbed into the SUV. The air was still; the mood was bizarre. He looked relieved, like a man who had just finished a deep-tissue massage or a long cry.
I wanted to scream. I wanted to ask a thousand questions. But I froze. I looked at him, then out the window. Most of the group was still standing out front, watching us drive away. I wondered what they saw: The "new blood"? The naive couple? The hot guy with the "attachments"?
I was glad to be moving, but the dread remained. We were leaving the circle, but I was driving home alone with the demons.
Lessons Learned
Healing is Chaotic: It doesn't always happen in a sterile clinic; sometimes it happens in the dark with drums and strangers.
The Mask is Thin: A man can look like a saint to a room of strangers while fighting a war at home.
Trust the Frequency: That "creepy" feeling from the stranger wasn't paranoia. It was a signal.
This is just one thread of the tapestry. These chronicles will jump back and forth—from the days when our house was a powder keg, to the moments I tried to land the plane of my own life while the engines were failing.
